The Problem with Idolizing Marriage in Christian Communities

Why We Must Stop Worshipping Marriage

Let’s be honest. In many Christian communities, marriage isn’t just a sacred union—it’s become a spiritual status symbol.

From pulpits to prayer groups, marriage is praised, promoted, and platformed to the point where being single is viewed as a problem that needs fixing. Singles are often seen as “in waiting” or “still searching,” not as whole, purposeful individuals walking in God’s will. But here’s the truth we need to face:

Idolizing marriage is harming the Church.
And worse—it’s distorting the Gospel.

Marriage Has Become a Golden Calf

Marriage, in and of itself, is not the issue. God created it. It’s good, holy, and beautiful when done His way. But anything—even something God-ordained—can become an idol when we elevate it above our relationship with Him.

That’s exactly what’s happening.

When churches prioritize married life over spiritual growth, when singles are treated as second-class citizens, when people feel pressured to marry just to be accepted or seen as “blessed”—we’ve crossed the line. We’re no longer seeking God’s will. We’re seeking cultural validation wrapped in Christian language.

And many Christian singles are drowning in it.

The Hidden Damage

This idolatry doesn’t just alienate singles—it warps their view of God.

It whispers lies:
“You’re not enough yet.”
“Something must be wrong with you.”
“You’re missing out on your real purpose.”

These aren’t just subtle messages—they’re soul-deep wounds that cause many to doubt God’s love, timing, and direction. We begin to believe that, until we find “the one,” we’re incomplete. That somehow, God’s will is delayed until we say, “I do.”

But that’s not the Gospel.

Jesus never said, “Follow Me... after you get married.” He said, “Follow Me.”

Right now!
As you are!
In your singleness!

Singleness Is Not a Season to End—It’s a Season to Embrace

In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul doesn’t just tolerate singleness—he celebrates it. He calls it a gift. A life of undivided devotion to the Lord. A sacred calling.

Adam didn’t get a wife because he was lonely. It was God who said he needed a helpmeet. Adam got a wife after he fulfilled his God-given assignment—naming the animals and stewarding Eden. Eve was not the beginning of his purpose; she was an extension of it.

So why are we telling singles their lives haven’t started until they marry?

Singleness is not a prelude to purpose.
It is purpose.

You are not “waiting” to be used by God. You are already positioned to walk in His power and presence.

Redefining the Narrative

Christian singles, it’s time to flip the script.

Don’t spend another day wishing your season away. Instead, invest in it. Discover what God says about your identity. Study His Word for yourself. Grow roots in His truth, not popular opinion. Fall in love with Jesus—not just the idea of marriage.

Marriage is not your reward for faithfulness.
Christ already is!
