The 7 Lies Singles Are Told (and What the Bible Says Instead)

In today’s world, Christian singles are constantly bombarded with messages about what it means to be single. From television shows to family gatherings, from dating apps to church hallways, there seems to be an endless list of assumptions, pressures, and half-truths. Unfortunately, many of these messages don’t align with God’s Word. They often leave singles feeling “less than,” discouraged, or even defective because they’re not married yet.

At S.A.L.T. (Singles Applying the Lord’s Truth Ministry), we believe that God’s truth must always have the final say. The Bible doesn’t minimize singleness—it elevates it as a purposeful season. That’s why we want to expose seven of the most common lies singles are told and replace them with the truth of Scripture.

Lie #1: You Are Incomplete Without a Spouse

This is one of the most damaging lies Christian singles face. Society—and even well-meaning friends—often suggest that life begins only after you’re married.

What the Bible Says:

Colossians 2:10 declares, “You are complete in Him.” Your identity, worth, and wholeness are found in Jesus Christ alone. Marriage can be a blessing, but it is not the source of completion. Christ is.

When singles understand this truth, they no longer live from a place of lack but from a place of fullness in Christ.

Lie #2: Singleness Means Something Is Wrong With You

If you’re not married by a certain age, culture tends to label you as “too picky,” “difficult,” or “undesirable.” This lie feeds insecurity and self-doubt.

What the Bible Says:

Psalm 139:14 reminds us, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” In the kingdom of heaven’s system, God is the One who brings the two together. God’s timing is perfect, and His purposes cannot be rushed or thwarted. Singleness is not a defect; it is a divine season designed by God for growth, intimacy with Him, and preparation.

Lie #3: Marriage Is the Ultimate Goal of Life

For many Christians, marriage is presented as the pinnacle of achievement. Sermons, books, and conferences often focus heavily on marriage and family, unintentionally sidelining singles.

What the Bible Says:

Paul, in 1 Corinthians 7, actually celebrates singleness: “I wish that all of you were as I am.” Paul understood that singleness creates unique opportunities to serve God wholeheartedly, without divided interests. Marriage is a gift, but so is singleness—and both are meant to glorify Christ.

Lie #4: Singleness Equals Loneliness

The enemy often whispers that being single means being condemned to a life of isolation and sadness.

What the Bible Says:

Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always.” The presence of God is a constant companion that fills every void. Furthermore, God places singles in community through the body of Christ. Spiritual family is a powerful reminder that you are never truly alone.

Lie #5: Your Value Depends on Who Chooses You

The world says your worth is tied to your relationship status or whether someone finds you attractive enough to pursue.

What the Bible Says:

Isaiah 43:4 says, “You are precious and honored in My sight, and because I love you.” Your value doesn’t depend on another person’s opinion—it flows from being created in the image of God and redeemed by Christ’s blood.

Lie #6: Singleness Wastes Time Until Marriage Arrives

Singles are often told to “just wait” for their spouse, as if this season is nothing more than a holding pattern before the “real” life begins.

What the Bible Says:

Ephesians 5:16 instructs us to “make the most of every opportunity.” Singleness is not wasted time—it is precious, purposeful time to pursue your calling, deepen your faith, and impact others for Christ. Singleness is not a time to focus only on your needs and wants. It is a time to focus on how God wants to use you to impact the lives of others. God uses every season for His glory, including this one.

Lie #7: God Doesn’t Care About Your Desire for Marriage

It can be easy to believe that God is indifferent to the longings of your heart, especially if you’ve been single longer than expected.

What the Bible Says:

Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” God cares deeply about you and your desires. While His answer may not always come in the way or timing you expect, His love and plan for your life are unwavering.

Why These Lies Matter

Each of these lies is designed to distort God’s perspective and lead singles into discouragement or compromise. When we replace lies with biblical truth, we gain clarity: singleness is not a curse, punishment, or second-class status. It is a powerful, intentional season in God’s design.

At S.A.L.T., we don’t just want to expose the lies—you need tools to live in the truth. That’s why we’ve created a unique Bible study just for singles like you.
